What Is a Stack-and-Nest Tote?
A stack-and-nest tote is a reusable plastic container designed with a dual-purpose feature: it stacks efficiently when loaded and nests inside other totes when empty. This design significantly reduces the floor space needed to store empty totes — a critical advantage in high-volume warehouse and distribution environments.
HOW STACK-AND-NEST TOTES WORK
The key design feature of a stack-and-nest tote is its ability to change configurations:
Stacking mode: Rotate the tote 180 degrees relative to the tote below. The rim geometry allows the loaded tote to rest securely on top of the tote below it and protect the items inside from bearing any weight.
Nesting mode: Return the tote to the same orientation as the totes below. The tapered sidewalls allow empty totes to nest inside each other, dramatically reducing storage volume.
Shirley K’s Stack-N-Nest totes rotate 180 degrees to switch between stacking and nesting mode. Wire bail stacking is also available on select models to maximize the container’s available volume.
TYPES OF CONFIGURATIONS
90-Degree Stack-and-Nest
Rotating the tote 90 degrees (a quarter turn) positions it to stack on the tote below. Nesting is achieved by aligning all totes in the same direction. This configuration is sometimes referred to as “cross-stack” — see our comparison guide for the differences.
180-Degree Stack-and-Nest
Rotating the tote 180 degrees (a half turn) positions it to stack.
Wire Bail Stacking
Wire bails flip down to create a stacking surface on the tote below. Provides a positive engagement for stacking security and maximizes the available volume in the tote.
