Happy New Year from Shirley K’s!
I hope this post finds all of you refreshed and hopeful for the start of a new year.
So many of us look at this time as an opportunity to begin new things and create resolutions.
I titled this post with the word intentions rather than resolutions on purpose. According to Wikipedia, the definition of intention is: a mental state that represents a commitment to carrying out an action or actions in the future. While the definition for resolution is : in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.
While they both are very similar in nature, to have an intention is to develop a NEW goal that can be acted upon and implemented, while a resolution seems to focus on an unfavorable behavior or trait that already exists.
The reason I point out these small differences is because I recently watched a video on this subject and loved the message being delivered. The primary message is to ACCEPT yourself and your past experiences that have lead to today as they have made you who you are. In accepting this, you can build upon your experiences and set new goals to strive for in 2018. Plan your intent to develop the actions that need to be transpired.
It is an age old cliche that most people break their resolutions before they even began trying to execute them. I believe the reason this happens is because the resolution is lacking in structure and proper planning. It is difficult to execute ANYTHING without a good plan in place. I have recently been challenged to strengthen my goal setting by exercising the SMART method. While developing your INTENTION for the new year, I also encourage you to think SMART. Be SPECIFIC in what you want to accomplish, develop a way to MEASURE your goal, pick a goal that is ATTAINABLE and not too difficult to execute, align your goal with that which is RELEVANT to your core mission and values, and lastly add a TIMELINE to when you want to complete it.
By adding these layers to your goal, you will have a much higher percentage of accomplishment and success in 2018.
It is our INTENT at Shirley K’s to implement SMART goals to serve our customers and one another. We have established targets to accomplish and grow our safety, efficiencies, and customer service in the new year. We are grateful for another year in business and wish you all the best.
